Drive (BDM) Maintenance and Protective Earthing (PE) Procedure
Qualified Personnel Only
Due to the modularity of the SINAMICS Perfect Harmony™ GH180 variable frequency design,
the maintenance and earthing procedure does not cover all variations of equipment types or
installations. Refer to figure "Drive System Schematic" and the factory drawings furnished with
each drive.
Siemens strongly recommends that only qualified personnel be allowed to perform
maintenance on SINAMICS Perfect Harmony™ Systems.
Perform the steps as indicated:
1. Stop drive operation, either through remote or local controls.
2. Isolate the drive from medium and low voltage power sources, as required, per applicable
practices / codes / laws.
3. Use correct PPE, electrical safety (rubber) gloves / leathers must be worn.
4. Wait ten minutes to allow energy stored in the power cell DC bus capacitors to dissipate.
5. If applicable, close all make-proof grounding switches and lock into the CLOSE position. If
make-proof grounding is not available, check connection points with a non-contact voltage
probe and apply suitably rated ground bonds, per applicable practices / codes / laws from
L1, L2, L3 / U1, V1, W1 and T1, T2, T3 / U2, V2, W2 within the drive to protective earth (PE).
6. Open the cell cabinet doors / panels and visually inspect all cells to confirm the DC-Bus
Voltage Indicator LED is off. If any lights are on, wait until they have gone out.
7. Proceed to open the cover on the top of the power cell to access the capacitor connection
points.
8. Set voltmeter to DC setting to > 1000 VDC scale.
9. Verify the voltage has decayed to a value of < 50 V.

WARNING
WARNING
Discharging Resistors
The power cells include discharge resistors to dissipate stored energy after the input voltage
is removed. The power cell DC bus voltage decays to less than 50 VDC in less than ten
minutes.
Be sure to follow all safety precautions to avoid risk of death, serious personal injury, and
equipment damage.
