Hard disk drive problems

v Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem
is solved.
v See the parts listing in the Problem Determination and Service Guide to determine which components are
customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU).
v If an action step is preceded by "(Trained service technician)," that step must be performed only by a
trained service technician.
Symptom
Not all drives are recognized by the hard disk drive
diagnostic test (the Fixed Disk test).
The computer stops responding during the hard disk drive
diagnostic test.
A hard disk drive was not detected while the operating
system was being started.
A hard disk drive passes the diagnostic Fixed Disk Test,
but the problem remains.
Action
If the part is a CRU, replace it. If the part is a FRU, the part must be replaced by a
trained service technician. See the Problem Determination and Service Guide on
the IBM IntelliStation Documentation CD for the parts listing.
Action
Remove the drive that is indicated by the diagnostic tests;
then, run the hard disk drive diagnostic test again. If the
remaining drives are recognized, replace the drive that
you removed with a new one.
Remove the hard disk drive that was being tested when
the computer stopped responding and run the diagnostic
test again. If the hard disk drive diagnostic test runs
successfully, replace the drive that you removed with a
new one.
Reseat all hard disk drives and cables; then, run the hard
disk diagnostic tests again.
Run the diagnostic SCSI Fixed Disk Test (see "Starting
the diagnostic programs and viewing the test log" in the
Problem Determination and Service Guide).
Note: This test is not available on computers that have
RAID arrays, computers that have IDE or SATA hard disk
drives, or computers that do not use the integrated SAS
adapter.
