Operation Using the Parking Brake Always set the parking brake when you stop the tractor or leave it unattended. Controls Setting the Parking Brake Become familiar with all of the controls (Fig. 2) before you start the engine and operate the tractor. 1.
Positioning the Seat Disengaging the Blade Control (PTO) 1. Press the clutch/brake pedal to stop the tractor. The seat can move forward and backward. Position the seat where you have the best control of the tractor and are most 2. Push the blade control (PTO) to off (Fig. 5). comfortable.
C. Insert the pin and secure it with the hairpin cotter. Starting the Engine 1. Sit down on the seat. 2. Set the parking brake; refer to Setting the Parking Brake on page 14. Note: The engine will not start unless you set the parking brake or fully depress the clutch/brake pedal.
Setting the KeyChoice Switch to Operate in Reverse An interlock feature on the tractor prevents the power take off (PTO) from operating when backing up. If you shift into reverse with the blades (PTO) engaged (i.e., with mower blades or other attachment running), the the engine will stop.
running, pull the blade control (PTO) into the Engaged Driving the Tractor Forward or position, push in the clutch, and put the ground speed Backward lever in Reverse. The engine should stop. 5. Push the blade control (PTO) into the Disengaged The throttle control regulates the engine speed as measured position, the ground speed pedal in Neutral, and set the in RPM (revolutions per minute).
Stopping the Tractor Installing the Discharge Cover To stop the tractor, release the ground speed pedal, To convert from side discharge to a mulching mower, disengage the blades (PTO), and turn the ignition key to install the discharge cover into the opening at the side of Off to stop the engine.
Operating Tips • For the best performance, operate the engine at the maximum speed. The mower requires air to thoroughly cut grass clippings, so do not set the height-of-cut too low or completely surround the mower in uncut grass. Always leave one side of the mower free from uncut grass to allow the air to be drawn into the mower.
Maintenance Recommended Maintenance Schedule Maintenance Service Maintenance Procedure Interval • Change the engine oil. After first 5 hours • Check the engine oil level. • Clean the mower housing. Each use • Check the safety system. • Check the brakes. Every 5 hours •...
Servicing the Engine Oil Check the oil level daily or after every 8 hours. Change the oil after the first 5 operating hours and every 50 operating hours thereafter. Note: Change the oil more frequently when operating conditions are extremely dusty or sandy. Oil Type: Detergent oil (API service SF, SG, SH, SJ, or 1868 higher)
Changing the Oil Filter 5. Open the hood. 6. Clean around the air cleaner to prevent dirt from getting Replace the oil filter every 100 hours or every other oil into the engine and causing damage. Pull up on the air change.
Paper Element: 1. Lightly tap the element on a flat surface to remove dust and dirt. 2. Carefully clean the rubber seal on the paper element to prevent debris from entering the engine. 3. Inspect the element for tears, an oily film, and damage to the rubber seal.
4. Close the hood. 3. Remove the cotter pin that secures the brake adjusting nut and slightly loosen the nut (Fig. 22). Cleaning the Cooling System 4. Insert a 0.015 in. (0.38 mm) feeler gauge between the brake disc and the brake puck (Fig. 22). Use a dry brush to clean grass and accumulated debris from 5.
Where to Add Grease Servicing the Battery Lubricate the front wheels and steering spindles until grease begins to ooze out of the bearings (Fig. 23). Warning CALIFORNIA Proposition 65 Warning Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm.
6. Disconnect the negative (black) ground cable from the Checking the Electrolyte Level battery post (Fig. 25). 1. Tip the seat forward to see the battery. 2. Look at the side of the battery. The electrolyte must be up to the Upper line (Fig. 26). m-5004 Figure 26 1.
4. Slowly pour distilled water into each battery cell until 5. Install the battery in the tractor and connect the battery the electrolyte level is up to the Upper line (Fig. 26) on cables; refer to Installing the Battery on page 27. the battery case.
Note: Now is the best time to install a new fuel filter 1-1/4 in. max. because the fuel tank is empty. (32 mm) 9. Install the fuel line onto the filter. Slide the hose clamp close to the filter to secure the fuel line and filter. Replacing the Fuel Filter Replace the fuel filter after every 100 operating hours or yearly, whichever occurs first.
Servicing the Headlights Use a #1156, automotive-type bulb. Removing the Bulb 1. Disengage the blades (PTO). 2. Set the parking brake. 3. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop. 4. Remove the ignition key. m-1875 5. Open the hood. Pull the wire connectors off of both of Figure 32 the bulb holder terminals.
Inspecting the Blades 1. Remove the mower; refer to Removing the Mower on page 32. 2. Inspect the cutting edges (Fig. 33). If the edges are not sharp or have nicks, remove the blades and sharpen them; refer to Sharpening the Blades on page 31. m-1796 Figure 34 1.
Important The curved part of the blade must point toward the inside of the mower. 2. Tighten the bolt to 40 to 60 ft-lb (54 to 81 N⋅m). Removing the Mower 1. Park the machine on a level surface, disengage the PTO, set the parking brake, stop the engine, and remove the ignition key.
13. Turn the front wheels fully to the left. Slide the mower out to the right to complete removal. Installing the Mower Danger Without the grass deflector, discharge cover, or complete grass catcher assembly mounted in place, you and others are exposed to blade contact and 1805 thrown debris.
