About this Guide The purpose of this guide is to provide information on the various components of the ASUS P53E Notebook PC and how to recognize and use them. Notebook Safety & Care The following measures will increase the life of the Notebook PC. Follow all precautions and instructions. Please report any damage to equipment immediately. Safety Precautions DO NOT place on uneven or unstable work surfaces, or near table or desk edges. DO NOT place on the floor or on a sitting area such as a chair or couch. DO NOT allow pets near the Notebook PC. DO NOT leave unattended. DO NOT leave in a vehicle. DO NOT stack or drop objects on top of the Notebook PC. DO NOT place together with small items that may scratch or otherwise damage the Notebook PC. DO NOT expose to dirty or dusty environments. DO NOT expose to strong magnetic or electrical fields. DO NOT expose to or use near water. DO NOT eat or drink, or have food or liquids in close proximity, while using the Notebook PC. DO NOT press on the LCD display panel. DO NOT leave the Notebook PC directly on your lap or other part of your body to prevent discomfort or injury from heat exposure. DO NOT use in ambient temperatures below 50ºF or above 95ºF. DO NOT check as luggage at the airport. DO NOT attempt to disassemble the Notebook PC. DO NOT carry or cover the Notebook PC with any materials that will reduce air circulation while it is powered ON. This includes placing the Notebook PC in the provided carrying case while powered on. DO NOT use damaged power cords or accessories. Transportation Precautions Before transport, turn OFF the Notebook PC and disconnect any external devices, such as USB flash drives, to prevent damage to the connectors. Close the LCD display panel securely to protect the keyboard and display panel. Use the provided Notebook carrying case to protect the PC from dirt, water, shock, and scratches. Cleaning Instructions Turn the Notebook PC OFF and disconnect the power cord and any external devices before cleaning. Wipe the Notebook PC outer casing with a clean cellulose sponge or chamois cloth dampened with a solution of nonabrasive detergent and a few drops of warm water. Remove any extra moisture with a dry cloth. Wipe the LCD display panel with a soft cloth. Dampen with plain water if necessary. Cloth should NOT contain any chemicals. Strong solvents such as thinners, benzene, or other chemicals should never be used on or near the Notebook PC. Burbank School District 111 ...
1. Microphone (Built‐in) – allows for video conferencing or simple audio recordings 2. Camera Indicator Light – indicates when camera is in use 3. Camera – allows for taking pictures, recording video, and engaging in video conferencing 4. LCD Display Panel – serves as the Notebook PC monitor 5. Power Indicator Light – indicates when power is on 6. Power Button – press once to turn on 7. Keyboard – extended qwerty keyboard includes full‐sized keys and dedicated numeric keypad 8. Touchpad and Buttons – provide same function as a desktop mouse 9. Status Indicators (lights located on the front): Power Indicator – green light indicates Notebook PC is on Battery Charge Indicator – dual‐color indicator shows the status of the battery’s power Drive Activity Indicator – green light indicates Notebook PC is accessing storage device(s) Wireless Indicator – green light indicates wireless connection is on PLEASE NOTE: If the wireless indicator light is NOT lit, you will not be able to connect to the district network or the internet. To activate the wireless, hold down the function key (fn) and press f2. Number Lock – green light indicates Number Lock is on Caps Lock – green light indicates Caps Lock is on Right Side View 1 2 3 5 1. Headphone Output Jack – stereo headphone jack (using the jack automatically disables the built‐in speakers) 2. Microphone Input Jack – mono microphone jack to connect external microphone 3. Accessories Power Cord The Notebook PC comes with a universal AC/DC power adapter that can connect to any 100V‐120V or 220V‐240V outlet. The power cord should be connected as follows: 2 3 1. Connect the AC power cord to the AC/DC adapter unit 2. Connect the AC/DC adapter unit to the Power (DC) Input on the left side of the Notebook PC 3. Plug the AC power cord into an outlet Notebook PC Carrying Case A 16” Case Logic carrying case will be provided with each Notebook PC. This case is to be used for transporting and storing the Notebook PC when powered off and not in use. The case includes: 1. A handle and shoulder strap for easy carrying 2. Getting Started Turning the Notebook PC On and Off Powering ON The Notebook PC can be used with the AC/DC power adapter and cord, or on battery power. The battery pack has already been installed and will begin to charge as soon as the Notebook PC is connected to external power using the power cord. Fully charge the battery prior to using the Notebook PC for the first time. To power on the Notebook PC, open the LCD display panel and press the power button once. Press power button once to turn on Light indicates power is on The white light on the power button will go on and the Notebook PC will bring up the standard Windows CTRL‐ALT‐ DELETE screen. Press CTRL‐ALT‐DELETE and log in with your BSD111 username and password. Powering OFF Click on the Start button, then click on the arrow next to Log Off to select the Shut Down option: Click here to Start access the Shut down option PLEASE NOTE: In the event that the operating system cannot properly turn off or restart, perform an emergency shutdown by holding the power button down for at least four (4) seconds. Using the Touch Pad The touchpad allows you to use your fingers to move the pointer around or select onscreen items instead of using a standard mouse. To use the touchpad, lightly press or tap your finger on the touchpad. Moving the Pointer Place your finger in the center of the touchpad and slide in a direction to move the pointer. Clicking/Tapping The touchpad buttons function as the left and right standard mouse buttons. With the pointer over an item, click the left button or tap the touchpad once to select the item. Either action will highlight the item showing that it has been selected. Alternately, double‐clicking the left button or tapping the touchpad twice in quick succession with the pointer over an icon will open the intended program. Using Hot Keys The function keys (f1 through f12) are located at the top of the Notebook keyboard. The majority of these keys are imprinted with an additional icon. When these function keys are used in combination with the function button (fn), they serve as hot keys to perform a specific command. Function Keys f1 – f12 Function button fn Helpful Commands The following key combinations perform the actions specified: 1. fn + f2 (Radio Tower Icon) – toggles the wireless connection on and off. When the wireless is enabled, the corresponding wireless indicator light on the front of the Notebook will turn green. PLEASE NOTE: If the wireless indicator light is NOT lit, you will not be able to access the district network or the internet. 2. fn + f5 (Sun Down Icon) – decreases the display brightness 3. fn + f6 (Sun Up Icon) – increases the display brightness 4. fn + f8 (LCD/Monitor Icons) – toggles between the Notebook’s LCD screen and an external monitor PLEASE NOTE: The external monitor must be connected BEFORE booting up the Notebook. 5. fn + f10 (Crossed Speaker Icon) – toggles the Notebook speakers on and off 6. fn + f11 (Speaker Down Icon) – decreases the Notebook speaker volume 7. fn + f12 (Speaker Up Icon) – increases the Notebook speaker volume Burbank School District 111 10 ...
