Preface Introduction The HP NetServer LXr 8000 is an Intel-CPU based network server that can use up to 8 GB of memory. This memory is situated on two boards that communicate with the rest of the NetServer via the midplane connector. -

1 Preparing for Installation Verify Contents CAUTION Do not remove the DIMM from its bag until you are ready to install it. Make sure the bag remains sealed. The DIMM is sensitive to humidity, so desiccant has been packed in the bag containing the DIMM. When the DIMM has been installed and the HP NetServer is running, it is no longer sensitive to humidity. - Page 10 Figure 1-1. HP Navigator CD-ROM. You are not required to use the HP Navigator CD-ROM to reconfigure your system after installing memory. However, we recommend that you use it to ensure that you have the latest drivers and information. HP NetServer Online Documentation CD-ROM. 2 Installing Memory and Memory Boards Memory Configuration Guidelines The HP NetServer accepts one or two memory boards. You remove and insert the boards through the front of the server. The boards sit horizontally in two side-by-side bays, and plug into connectors on the server’s midplane board. - Page 14 NOTE Keep both memory boards in the HP NetServer during operation, even if the secondary board has no DIMMs. The empty board acts as a terminator for the memory board slot. Figure 2-1 shows the location of the memory boards. Primary Memory Board...
- Page 15 A memory board has 16 DIMM sockets and accepts 64 MB or 256 MB buffered EDO DIMMs (50 ns). Each board has a maximum capacity of 4 GB when fully populated with 256 MB DIMMs. The minimum memory configuration is four 64 MB DIMMs on the main memory board (in slots J1, J2, J3, and J4).
- Page 16 The standard configuration of memory is 256 MB on the primary board, as four 64 MB DIMMs in slots J1 through J4 (shown in Figure 2-2 above). Add memory four DIMMs at a time. If you use both boards, both must have the same type and number of DIMMs in the same slots.

- Page 18 Observe these guidelines when adding memory: Add (or remove) DIMMs to the memory board in groups of four. Each group of four DIMMs must fill one bank on a memory board. A bank must be either fully populated or completely empty. See Figure 2-3. When populating a memory board, fill Bank A first, then Bank B, then Bank C, and finally Bank D.

Removing the Memory Board To remove the memory board, follow this procedure: 1. Power down the HP NetServer. See Chapter 2 of the HP NetServer LXr 8000 Installation Guide for details. 2. Remove the HP NetServer’s front bezel. See Chapter 3 of the HP NetServer LXr 8000 Installation Guide for details. - Page 25 Figure 2-8. Gaining Access to the Memory Board Bays 4. The memory bays are protected by an access panel. Loosen the three captive screws that hold the panel in place, and then remove the panel. See Figure 2-8.

6. Hold the memory board by the corners, and carefully pull the board from its slot until the edge connectors are free of the system board connectors. 7. Place the memory board component-side up on a firm, anti-static surface for protection. Installing DIMMs on the Memory Board Follow these steps to install a DIMM in a slot on the memory board. - Page 28 3. Refer to Figures 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, and 2-6. CAUTION Do not rock the DIMM into place, but apply firm and even pressure. If a gap exists between the retaining clips and the DIMM module, remove the module and repeat steps 5-6. 7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 to install the other three DIMMs, according to the rules listed in “Memory Configuration Guidelines,"... - Page 30 When removing banks of DIMMs from a system with two memory boards, make sure that both boards have identical DIMM configurations when you finish. (But if you are reducing the system to its minimum memory configuration, four DIMMs, put all four DIMMs on the primary (right) board and leave the other board empty.) CAUTION Close all retaining clips on the memory board before inserting it into your NetServer. This includes clips on empty slots as well as those on slots containing DIMMs. This facilitates insertion of the memory board. 9. Replace the memory board. See "Replacing the Memory Board." Close the retaining latches on the front of the memory board to seat it snugly. The latches should clamp down on the sides of the bay and hold the board firmly in place.
