NOTE: Wheninstallinganewsparkplug,tighten 1/2-turnafterthe spark
plugseats to compress t he washer. W henreinstallingausedsparkplug,
tighten 1/8-to 1/4-turnafter the sparkplug seats to compress t he washer.
Thesparkplug mustbe tightened securely.Aloose sparkplug can become
very hotand candamagethe engine.
Cleaningthe Engine
If the enginehasbeenrunning,allowit to coolfor at leasthalfan hourbefore
cleaning. P eriodically r emove dirt build-upfrom engine.Before servicingthe
engine,remove the carburetorcover a nd/orblowerhousing. C lean thedirt and
debris from the followingareas:
Donot spraythe enginewith water to clean it becausethe water could
contaminatethe fuel. Usinga garden hose or pressurewashingequipment
can alsoforce water into the muffler opening. Waterthat passes through
the muffler can enterthe cylinder andcausedamage.

Removing debris will insureadequate cooling, c orrect e nginespeed andreducethe
riskof fire.
Accumulationof debrisaround the muffler could causeafire. Inspectand
clean beforeeveryuse.
Lubrication
Lubricate the pivot pointson the controlhandle andthe extension springat the end
ofthe controlcablewith alight oil onceeveryseason andbeforethesnowthrower
isput into storage at the endof the season.
ShavePlate
Tocheck the adjustment o f the shave plate,placethe machine on alevelsurface.
Thewheels,shave plateandaugerpaddles shouldall contactthe levelsurface.
Notethatif the shave plateisadjustedtoo high,snowmayblowunderthe auger
housing.If theshaveplatewearsout excessively, or the snowthrowerdoesnot
self-propel, t he shaveplatemaybetoo low to the groundandneeds to beadjusted.
NOTE: Onnewsnowthrowersor machines w ith anewshave plateinstalled,
the augerpaddles maybeslightlyoffthe ground.
Toadjustthe shaveplateproceed asfollows:
1.
Run the snowthroweruntilthe fuel tankisempty.
2.
Pullthestartercorduntil resistance isfelt. Thentip the snowthrowerback
until it restsonthe handles. T oensure thatthe snowthrowerdoesnot tip
forward,it maybenecessary t o secure the handleto the groundwith ablock
or otherobject.
3.
Loosen the fourflangelocknutsandcarriage screws whichsecure the shave
platetothe housing. S eeFigure 14.Movethe shave plateto the appropriate
positionandretightenthe nutsandscrews securely.

Tipthe snowthrowerbacktothe operatingpositionandpull thestarter
handle afew timestoseeif it isdifficult to pull.
5.
Ifthe starterisdifficult to pull,remove the sparkplug andpullthe handle
several t imestoensurethatanyoil trappedinthe engineheadisremoved.
Oil maycomeout of the sparkplug hole when it isremovedandthe starter
handle is pulled.
6.
Inspect t hesparkplug.Ifit iswet, cleanoff anyoil beforere-installing.
