Chapter 4
SNMP Remote Subsystem Management
SNMP is a part of the TCP/IP protocol suite that supports maintenance functions for storage
and communication devices. The 9900V subsystem utilizes SNMP to transfer status and
management commands to the UNIX
When the SNMP manager requests status information or when a service information message
(SIM) occurs, the SNMP agent on the 9900V SVP notifies the SNMP manager on the UNIX
server. Notification of 9900V error conditions is made in real time, providing the UNIX
server user with the same level of monitoring and support available to the mainframe user.
The SIM reporting via SNMP enables the user to monitor the 9900V subsystem from the

The SNMP agent only initiates trap operations, which alert the SNMP manager when a SIM
occurs. The SNMP manager requests information from the SNMP agent and receives the traps
in response to the query.
For assistance with SNMP manager configuration on the UNIX
user documentation for the SNMP management software, or contact the vendor's technical
support. For more information on SNMP, see the Remote Console - Storage Navigator User's
Guide (MK-92RD101). For assistance with specific SNMP configuration issues related to the
9900V subsystem, please contact your Hitachi Data Systems representative.
