Magruder's is Washington D.C.'s only
locally owned supermarket chain and has
served the community for over 131 years.
With ten locations in the Washington area,
it is known for its high quality products and
friendly, personal service.
New POS system brings more functionality
at the Point of Sale
Magruder's has roots that go back a century, but
it uses the latest POS technology to help stay
competitive. Recently the company completed
a $2 million in-store POS system upgrade to
improve operations, boosts sales and increase
customer satisfaction. Magruder's included Epson
printers in their new system to reduce the risk of
liability related to alcohol and tobacco sales and
to streamline their check-cashing services while
reducing fraud at the point of sale.
Magruder's takes advantage of digital
check and ID imaging
Magruder's opted to use Epson's TM-H6000II
multifunction printer with TransScan™
digital check imaging and ProofPlus™ ID
scanning. Cashiers at Magruder's stores now can
collect images of ID cards to reduce liability
on liquor and tobacco sales, as well as scan,
store and transmit digital images of checks.
When combined with ECC (electronic check

conversion), TransScan digital check imaging
cuts check processing costs, speeds collection
times of returned checks and minimizes costs
due to fraud. "Epson printers with check and
ID imaging decrease our
overall liability, while
speeding up transaction
time for our customers," said Gibson. "And
lowering our check costs allows us to be more
competitive in our marketplace."
Solutions through partnership
Torex Retail, an independent developer and
integrator of retail technology, was instrumental
in providing sales and support for the Epson
printer. The retail industry leader was also a key
player in working with Magruder's to develop
an overall POS solution, which now includes
NCR Fastlane self-checkout systems, a Symbol
wireless LAN, and PCs running Torex's ISIS
web-based POS software and StoreCentral.NET.
"Magruder's has been a strong development
partner for us," said Don Gusse, director of
marketing solutions at Torex, an Epson
Envision Strategic Business Partner. "We are
enthusiastic about helping Magruder's capitalize
on Epson technologies."
