    Chapter 1. Setting up your computer Before you begin, be sure to read “Safety Information” on page iii. Use these instructions to set up your computer. Selecting a location for your computer Make sure you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical outlets for all devices.

    Adjust the monitor so that the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 in.), and position it so that you can view it without having to twist your body.

    Connecting computer cables Use the following steps to set up your computer. Look for the small icons on the following pages, and on the back of your computer. If your computer cables and connector panel have color-coded connectors, match the color of the cable end with the color of the connector. For example, match a blue cable end with a blue panel connector, a red cable end with a red connector, and so on.

    7. Connect any universal serial bus (USB) device cables to the USB connectors. 8. Connect external audio device cables, such as speakers, microphone, or headphone cable to the appropriate connector (available on some models only.) 9. Finishing the software installation After you start the computer for the first time, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the software installation. If you do not complete the software installation the first time the computer is turned on, unexpected results might occur.

    Other operating systems If you install your own operating system, follow the instructions that come with your operating system CDs or diskettes. Remember to install all device drivers after you install your operating system. Installation instructions are provided with or on the CDs or diskettes, or in the README files. Shutting down the computer When you are ready to turn off your computer, always follow the shut down procedure.

    Accessing and printing the User Guide The User Guide for your computer has information about installing optional hardware.
